Under the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s philosophy of realizing a “coexistence society” where everyone can participate in society through work according to their hopes and abilities regardless of disability, the statutory employment rate is being raised in stages. From July 2026, it has been decided to increase the rate by 0.2% to 2.7% for employers with 37.5 or more employees.

While employment of people with disabilities is progressing, people with visual impairments are a minority within the overall disabled population. Many companies have no employees with visual impairments or only a few, and knowledge on how to employ and enable employees with visual impairments to thrive is not yet widely shared.

In Part 1, we welcome Mr. Inoue from the Center for Employment and Lifelong Learning Support for People with Visual Impairments, who works as a job coach helping people with visual impairments work smoothly in the workplace, and Ms. Koyama, who is a professional with lived experience of visual impairment working at AXA Life Insurance Co., Ltd.

Topics include:

  • What environments and training are necessary for employees with visual impairments to work?

  • What support can companies receive, such as job coaching?

  • Ms. Koyama’s job responsibilities and work environment as a case study

In Part 2, from the corporate and management side, we will be joined by:

  • Mr. Hasegawa from the Corporate Philosophy & Sustainability Division, Corporate Philosophy & CSV Promotion Department, Santen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

  • Ms. Maehara from Tokon Co., Ltd., Corporate Planning Office, HR Recruitment Group and Business Development Office, Organizational Support Group

Topics include:

  • What tasks are entrusted to members with visual impairments?

  • Team and group-level practices and innovations

  • Changes within the company and teams that emerged after employing employees with visual impairments
